Entry points to Forest Management and higher qualifications

We offer a range of forestry qualifications across the industry sectors from entry Level 2 foundation skills, Level 3 forest harvesting and forestry operations certificates, to the Diploma in Forest Management, Level 6. A high percentage of learning takes place in within the forest estate.

All programmes have a strong focus on health and safety, risk management, emergency and communication skills and iwi and cultural environmental interests. Individual programmes provide specific skills and knowledge in forest harvesting, machine operating, forestry earthworks, planting, pruning, thinning, mensuration and higher-level management.

Qualifications available through the Generation Programme are:

NCEA Level 2 with Primary Industries (Forestry) Vocational pathways – Level 2
New Zealand Certificate in Forest Industry Foundation Skills -Level 2

Graduates assisted into employment may be supported through:

• Programmes for people in the workforce
• Forestry roading and earthworks (see also our page, ‘Waihanga Rori’)
• Forest Silviculture

As part of our kaupapa, Tūranga Ararau establishes robust working relationships with contractor employers and forest management companies, in preparing and supporting akonga for work in the rural sectors. Our work-based programmes are developed at industry request with content prescribed by industry subject experts and according to industry best practice.

Our working and advisory group personnel comprise a mix of technical, operational and education sector people. Training happens mainly in learner workplaces using in-house trainers with assessment against standards being done by workplace or contract assessors, who are appointed and supported by our organisation.

Tūranga Ararau offers regional and wider coverage for many industry programmes.

Qualifications:

New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Forestry) – Level 3, and micro credentials in forestry earthworks
New Zealand Certificate in Forest Operations – Level 3, with strands in silviculture operations.
New Zealand Certificate in Forestry Harvesting Operations with Strands – Level 3
New Zealand Certificate in Forest Operations with strands in Forest Mensuration, Pruning and Thinning to Waste – Level 3

Short Courses

• Forestry general requirements; environmental, human factors, mental and physical wellness
• Vegetation Fire; fireground entry, basic fire-fighting, Use RT
• Environmental thinning (poison or chemical thinning)
• Forest planting and Tree selection
• Assessor and Trainer training

There is regular demand from forest management companies and contractors for forest entry level and other bespoke training. We meet these needs by short courses, conducted on-job or as workshops ‘in-class’.

Individual unit standards or micro credentials are assessed and awarded as skill recognition in all cases.

Whakaiputanga Ngahere –
Diploma in Forest Management – Level 6

This qualification offers opportunities for graduates of our introductory and work based programmes, to gain a higher level forest management qualification. It recognizes the unique features of forestry in Tairāwhiti, increased iwi ownership of local forests and conversion of existing holdings into commercial forestry. It also captures the curriculum subjects of the ‘traditional’ forest management diploma previously delivered for wider industry by Toi Oho Mai in Rotorua.

Programme content and delivery has been revised to cater for students who seek full time study over two years and part-time for those who are employed within and supported by forest industry employers.

Currently more than 30 Tūranga Ararau diploma graduates hold key management roles in forestry companies nationwide.

We deliver this programme from sites in Gisborne and Rotorua.
